Domain restriction by conditional connectives

چکیده
This paper aims to rehabilitate the idea that there are conditional connectives in the logical forms of natural language. I propose to adopt a connective with a truth-value gap semantics inspired by Belnap (1970), such that conditionals only have a truth-value if their antecedent is true. Together with the assumption that quantifiers select worlds for which their scope is defined, this predicts that if -clauses under quantifiers serve to restrict the domain of quantification. The proposed semantics allows for a straightforwardly compositional analysis of quantified conditionals. 1 The decline of the conditional connective

Automatic discourse connective detection in biomedical text
OBJECTIVE Relation extraction in biomedical text mining systems has largely focused on identifying clause-level relations, but increasing sophistication demands the recognition of relations at discourse level. A first step in identifying discourse relations involves the detection of discourse connectives: words or phrases used in text to express discourse relations. In this study supervised mac...
متن کاملBioDCA Identifier: A System for Automatic Identification of Discourse Connective and Arguments from Biomedical Text
This paper describes a Natural language processing system developed for automatic identification of explicit connectives, its sense and arguments. Prior work has shown that the difference in usage of connectives across corpora affects the cross domain connective identification task negatively. Hence the development of domain specific discourse parser has become indispensable. Here, we present a...
متن کاملA First-order Conditional Probability Logic with Iterations
We investigate a first-order conditional probability logic with equality, which is, up to our knowledge, the first treatise of such logic. The logic, denoted LFPOIC=, allows making statements such as: CP>s(φ, θ), and CP6s(φ, θ), with the intended meaning that the conditional probability of φ given θ is at least (at most) s. The corresponding syntax, semantic, and axiomatic system are introduced...
متن کاملMental Models and the Meaning of Connectives: A Study on Children, Adolescents and Adults
We present a study on the ability to comprehend conjunction, exclusive disjunction, bi-conditional and conditional. Mental model theory predicts differences in difficulty in dealing with such connectives, and it also predicts that it is easier to envisage situations that comply with an assertion than situations which do not comply. We carried out an experiment on children, adolescents and adult...
متن کاملTruth Values and Connectives in Some Non-Classical Logics
The question as to whether the propositional logic of Heyting, which was a formalization of Brouwer's intuitionistic logic, is finitely many valued or not, was open for a while (the question was asked by Hahn). Kurt Gödel (1932) introduced an infinite decreasing chain of intermediate logics, which are known nowadays as Gödel logics, for showing that the intuitionistic logic is not finitely (man...
